What is artificial pancreas? | Know Emerging Technologies Series

An artificial pancreas is a medical device that is designed to automatically monitor and regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. It consists of three components: a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), an insulin pump, and a control algorithm.

The CGM measures glucose levels in the body and sends that information to the control algorithm, which calculates how much insulin needs to be delivered. The algorithm then sends instructions to the insulin pump to deliver the appropriate amount of insulin. This process is continuous and automatic, so the patient doesn't have to manually adjust their insulin levels.

The goal of the artificial pancreas is to provide better glucose control, reduce the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and improve the quality of life for people with diabetes. It is especially beneficial for people with type 1 diabetes, who must manually manage their insulin levels throughout the day.

While the concept of an artificial pancreas has been around for several decades, it has only recently become a reality. Several companies have developed artificial pancreas systems that have been approved by regulatory agencies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the technology is still evolving and there are ongoing efforts to improve its accuracy, reliability, and ease of use.
