Smart Gmail

Today, I was surprised to see the below message from Gmail when sending a mail after composing the mail with the message starting as " I have included the below ...."

Did you mean to attach files?
You wrote "I have included" in your message, but there are no files attached, Send anyway?

I am not sure when Gmail has introduced this feature. Let me know if you have seen this message previously. And, you can share your experience thro' comments section if you have noticed any similar feature/behaviour of Gmail.

I am thinking whether I can include this feature also an advantage in the list of Gmail advantages.

PayPal resumes local bank withdrawal in India , but it needs Export Code

PayPal has announced that it will resume local bank withdrawals in India from March 3rd.

Farhad Irani from PayPal has mentioned this update in his recent blogpost.

I’m pleased to tell you that the RBI has now allowed us to resume bank withdrawals for settlements for exports of goods and services. We are currently making changes to comply with Indian regulations for settlements for exports of goods and services, and we anticipate that as of Wednesday, March 3rd, we will be able to resume the bank withdrawal service. As part of the changes, you will be required to fill out a new field entitled ‘Export Code’ when you request a withdrawal.

PayPal is sending this message to its Indian Customers thro' email also.

So, now the question is what is "Export Code" . Whether it is IEC (Import Export Code) or simply PAN number. Let us wait till March 1 for getting further update from PayPal.

And, paypal blog post says PayPal is not having approval from RBI for doing personal inward remittances to India. So PayPal personal payments won't work until payPal gets this approval.

Don't send/share your password with anyone. Just ignore the phishing emails

Recently I got another phishing email asking my gmail username and password.

I assume many people might have received similar email. I heard that some emails will ask password of your online bank accounts also.

Don't send reply for these junk/phishing emails. Just ignore them.
No one including Google will ask your password for verification. Actually they can not verify your account using your password. Because, even they can not access your password as your password will be stored in encrypted format.

Find below the email which I received. I am not sure if there is any way to report these spam mails with Google or any other fraud preventing systems. If you know any such a system you can share it thro' the comments.

Javascript code for selecting/de-selecting all Checkboxs

Check-boxes are useful for allowing the user to select multiple options when filling a HTML web form.

If the HTML Form is having large number of checkboxes, then selecting and de-selecting all the checkboxes will be difficult for the users. And, it will take significant amount of time.

So, we can provide separate button for allowing the users to select or de-select all the checkboxes by doing single click.

Qualitypoint.blogspot.com

Qualitypointtech.com

Qualitypointtech.net

For providing above form, the HTML code will be as below

<form name="frmselectdeselectcheckbox" id="frmselectdeselectcheckbox" action="" method="post">

<input type="checkbox" name="selectdeselectcheckbox[]" id="selectdeselectcheckbox" value="1"/> Qualitypoint.blogspot.com <br>
<input type="checkbox" name="selectdeselectcheckbox[]" id="selectdeselectcheckbox" value="2"/> Qualitypointtech.com<br>
<input type="checkbox" name="selectdeselectcheckbox[]" id="selectdeselectcheckbox" value="3" /> Qualitypointtech.net <br>

<input type="button" name="selectall" value="Select All" onClick="SetAllCheckBoxes('frmselectdeselectcheckbox','selectdeselectcheckbox',true);">
<input type="button" name="clearall" value="Clear All" onClick="SetAllCheckBoxes('frmselectdeselectcheckbox','selectdeselectcheckbox',false);">
</form>

A javascript function "SetAllCheckBoxes" will be called in the onClick event of the Select All and Clear All buttons.

This javascript function should be added in the head section of the HTML file.

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function SetAllCheckBoxes(FormName, FieldName, CheckValue)
{
if(!document.forms[FormName])
return;
var objCheckBoxes = document.forms[FormName].elements[FieldName];
if(!objCheckBoxes)
return;
var countCheckBoxes = objCheckBoxes.length;
if(!countCheckBoxes)
objCheckBoxes.checked = CheckValue;
else
// set the check value for all check boxes
for(var i = 0; i < countCheckBoxes; i++)
objCheckBoxes[i].checked = CheckValue;
}

</script>

Xoom withdrawal is also NOT working for Indian PayPal Users

Previously, Indian PayPal users were able to use Xoom for withdrawing money from their PayPal account to their Indian local bank account.

But starting from yesterday, Xoom is also NOT working. All the recently started Xoom transactions are getting refunded to PayPal account.

It seems RBI had put restriction on Xoom also. So, currently Indian PayPal users can not use Bank account withdrawal and Xoom.

So, only Cheque and cc (Credit Card) withdrawal are now available for Indian PayPal users.

Issue, Delivery and Collection of Cheque may take long time (around 20-25 days). So, now Indian PayPal users have to use credit card withdrawal which costs 5$ fee and significant amount of ATM withdrawal fees and one day interest.

If anybody used cheque option and cc option you can share your experience. And, you can use comments section to convey any other options.

Sun-Set in Computer World

sun.com was the official website of the Sun Micro System which was
founded in 1982.

Sun had good market share for Computer Servers and Work Station.

Platform independent Java from Sun was very popular with slogan "Write once, run anywhere"

And, Sun had made significant contribution to the open source world.

Recently Oracle acquired Sun Micro System.

The worst thing is, if we type www.sun.com it will be automatically redirected to oracle.com. i-e Sun website was removed immediately after completing the acquisition, even when the Sun Micro-systems existed several decades.

We can not see such a behavior anywhere else.

HP acquired compaq around 10 years back. But still compaq website exists.
Similarly blogger.com, orkut.com and youtube.com are available as it is even when Google acquired them.

Since Sun had acquired the open source database MySql, now MySql is in hands of Oracle Corporation.

Oracle has committed that it will develop and enhance MySql.

But I think that MySql can not expect any good will from Oracle which is not willing to even keep the website of Sun Micro-systems.

Sun's former CEO Jonathan sent the below tweet as his resignation message in his twitter account @OpenJonathan

Today's my last day at Sun. I'll miss it. Seems only fitting to end on a #haiku. Financial crisis/Stalled too many customers/CEO no more

So, Financial crisis made the Sun CEO no more, Oracle made the Sun website no more.
Let us see what will happen to MySql which is the world's most popular open source database for the Web.

What do you think about future of MySql?
Do you think Oracle corporation's expertise in database systems will help to improve MySql?
Or, Oracle corporation will suppress MySql by considering MySql as competitor for its own Oracle Database irrespective of its commitment made to European Commission? Is it possible for European Commission to take any Solid action against Oracle Corporation if it try to suppress/destroy MySql?
Is it really possible for Oracle to make MySql disappear? (because I assume that someone else can continue the development of mysql as it is open-sourced, Is my understanding correct?)

Google is irresponsible in restoring locked Blogger Blog

Today, all our blogger blogs were down for 2 hours. This issue was resolved after entering mobile verification code for re-activating my Google account which was disabled temporarily. I apologize if it causes any inconvenience to our blog readers.

I don't know why my Google Account was temporarily disabled. By doing Google search, I came to know about two possible reasons for this issue. One is Spam. I don't think it is the reason in our case. Because we are not publishing any spam content.
Next reason is security purpose. In this case I would like to thank Google for protecting my Google Account. If you have faced any similar issue you can share it thro' the comments section.

This issue reminded me another issue which continues for more than 3 months.

One of our blogger blog (http://medicalnewsarchive.blogspot.com/) was locked before 3 months. I had taken initiative to restore it back.

I entered the captcha security code many times. But it didn't help. And, I tried all steps (e.g making entry in google spreadsheet) discussed in Google support forum.

Even, I opened a new thread in Google support forum.

On 11/18/09, I posted below message in this thread.

Your Blogs URL: http://medicalnewsarchive.blogspot.com/
Browser(s) used: FireFox
Location: India

One of our blogger blog (http://medicalnewsarchive.blogspot.com/) got locked.
I had clicked "Restore Access". But still showing below message only.

We received your unlock request on November 12, 2009. On behalf of the robots, we apologize for locking your non-spam blog. Please be patient while we take a look at your blog and verify that it is not spam.

And, when I tried to access it from browser it is showing below message.

"The blog you were looking for was not found."

Is there any way to restore it quickly? I couldn't understand why blogger is showing "not found" message while it was actually locked.

This type of happenings greatly affect the reliability of Google.
Now I need to think about our other blogger blogs also.

Anyone can suggest any good alternative for migrating our blogger blogs without affecting our page rank and alexa ranking and inbound links?

Thanks,
Rajamanickam
http://www.qualitypointtech.com/

I didn't get any proper reply even after completing all the steps suggested in Google support forum. So, today I have updated the forum thread with below message.

Still (even after 3 months) the blog http://medicalnewsarchive.blogspot.com/ is in locked state only.

Any solution? Whether anybody got their blog back after getting locked by spam bots?

It is seems Google is becoming very Dangerous as it couldn't restore the blog even after 3 months. I have taken all the steps mentioned in the forum. But nothing helped.

"On behalf of the robots, we apologize for locking your non-spam blog." is the message displayed after clicking "Restore Access" . So I understand that our blog is non-spam blog. Anyway, I will be happy to make any corrections/changes if I need to make. But the the worst part is, I didn't get any message/reply irrespective of my continuous attempt to restore it.

Actually this blog is having very less content/visitors only. But I am having other blogger blogs (e.g http://www.qualitypoint.blogspot.com/) with lot of contents/visitors. So, I am trying hard to understand/resolve this issue.

And, today (February 21) I faced difficulty with my other blogger blogs also. It showed "blog removed" message. I was able to restore them only after entering mobile verification code. I don't know who can explain the reason for this blog removal issue.

Actually, I am great fan of Google especially Gmail. I have written an article about advantages of Gmail (http://qualitypoint.blogspot.com/2009/10/advantages-of-using-gmail.html) . I am actively using my Gmail Id only even when I am having email id with my own domain name.

But all these Issues (blog removal, blog locked) without any proper reply make me to think about Danger of Google.
Because, no one in Google is willing to help me to sort out this issue even after 3 months. It is really shame for Google which is my role model company.

The worst part is, Google analytic clearly shows that someone (person/bot) from Hyderabad Google office accessed our locked blog while it was not accessible to public. If it is a person, then I can assume that Google is really irresponsible as they are not sending any reply/message even after they have taken look into the locked blog. I expect them to unlock the blog early or at-least remove the blog after stating the reason.

Thanks,
Rajamanickam
http://www.qualitypointtech.com/

Really, I couldn't understand why Google is not taking any steps for restoring the locked blog, while it used to behave very smart in all other situations especially in taking steps to protect our Google accounts.

I used to wonder the smart behavior of Google in its other products such as Gmail, AdSense and adWords.

Handling issues related to functions deprecated in PHP5.3

Recently one of our Customers has updated php and mysql version from 4.x to 5.x in the hosting server of their Joomla based website.

After doing this upgration/migration, many pages were not working. They started giving error messages such as, "Deprecated: Function eregi() is deprecated..."

We resolved these issues by replacing deprecated functions with equivalent functions.

For example, replaced split() with explode(). And, replaced eregi() with preg_match('/regexp/i',,).

Note that we should select appropriate modifier in regular expression in the preg_match argument. i-e The modifier should not be the part of the regular expression statement. We need to use rarely used character as modifier. For example we can use "~" as modifier.

This blog post was very helpful for resolving many issues.

I think Joomla is used by many people. But still I couldn't find any easy way to update the Joomla code automatically according to php/mysql upgration.

If you know any good article for doing php/mysql up-gradation you can mention it thro' comments. And, you can share your up-gradation experience.

He had invented thousands of new things including phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

He holds 1,093 U.S. patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

In school, the young Edison's mind often wandered, this ended Edison's three months of official schooling. He learned everything from his Mother.Edison had hearing problems from early age. During his childhood days he sold candy,vegetables and newspapers on trains running from Port Huron to Detroit. This experience eventually led him to found 14 companies, including General Electric (GE).

Edison became a telegraph operator after he saved three-year-old Jimmie MacKenzie from a train accident. Jimmie's father is a station agent. He trained Edison as telegraph operator.

On December 25, 1871, Edison married 16-year-old Mary Stilwell.

He invented phonograph in 1877 which gained him lot of fame.
His first speech thro' his Phonograph is "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

His another major invention is long lasting electric bulb.

PayPal explains its issue in India

Payment processor "PayPal" (Subsidiary of eBay)has created lot of issues in doing India based payment transactions.

Many people got angry due to irresponsible behaviour such as reversing transactions without any prior information. And, lot of discussions were going on in many forums

At last PayPal has explained the reason behind all these issues.

In a blog post PayPal spokesperson has mentioned that PayPal has suspended the services (personal payment transactions and local bank trasfer) to respond to enquiries from the Indian regulators, specifically questions on whether personal payments constitute remittances into India.

His blog post conveys below three key things.

- We can make Payments(e.g service/goods) other than personal payment. They won't be reversed.
- Suspension of Personal payments from/to India could last months.
- Customers should be able to withdraw their funds to a local bank within the next few days.

Find below his Answers for the questions in the blog post.

It’s Anuj from the comms team here again.

Following on from my blog post on Saturday, I’ve received a number of questions about the situation in India and I thought it’d be best to simply answer the questions in a blog post.

Here are answers to the top questions I’ve received:

1. Why did you suspend local bank transfers and personal payments to and from India?

We temporarily suspended these services to respond to enquiries from the Indian regulators, specifically questions on whether personal payments constitute remittances into India.

We’re working with the regulators and our bank processing partners in India to get this resolved as quickly as we can. We realize that this is causing considerable inconvenience to our customers and I want to reassure you that this is a top priority for the leadership at PayPal

2. When will personal payments be turned back on?

The regulators recently let PayPal know about revised licensing rules that we are now actively engaged in securing. Personal payments to and from India will be suspended for at least a few months until we fully resolve the questions from the Indian regulators.

3. When will local bank withdrawals be available?

Customers should be able to withdraw their funds to a local bank within the next few days. In the meantime, we’re going to restore the money into the PayPal accounts of any customers in India who have initiated a recent withdrawal, so they know that the money is safe in their accounts. Customers will also be reimbursed for any withdrawal fee charges.

4.The PayPal reversal has left me with a negative balance. What shall I do?

If you bought something or transferred money out of your PayPal account to your bank account before we reversed the payment then you may be left with a negative balance.

If this was a payment for a purchase of goods or services, you should contact the sender and have him or her resend the payment as follows:

(a) click the Send Money tab, and

(b) select “purchase.”

If this was a personal payment, then the sender will need to find another payment method until we restore the service. We’re sorry about this.

If you can’t recover the funds from the sender, you can bring your PayPal balance current by logging in to the PayPal account and clicking the “Resolve Negative Balance” link on the Account Overview page.

5. My payment was reversed but it was not a personal payment. What happened?

Only personal payments should have been reversed. Customers who believe that their payments were reversed in error should request that the payment be sent again by following the steps above (click the Send Money tab and select “purchase.”)

If you are still having problems, please contact PayPal customer support

I hope that this helps clear up some of the confusion around the situation in India and I’d like to take the opportunity to personally apologize on behalf of PayPal for the inconvenience that this is causing our customers.

NewYorkTimes points RBI as the reason for all these issues.
It says,

“Providers of cross-border money transfer service need prior authorization from the Reserve Bank under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act,” a spokeswoman for the Reserve Bank of India, Alpana Killawalla, said in an e-mailed response to questions. “PayPal does not have our authorization.”

And one more thing is, PayPal has started paying compensation for the Indian customers who were lost some amount of money as fee and Exchange rate difference during the reversal done by PayPal. So the people's angry turned towards RBI now.

Resolved Visual Studio installation issue

Below error message was shown while trying to install Visual C++ 6.0 in one of our Computers.

"ODBC's SQL InstallDriverMAnager Failed"

By doing Google search we came to know about below solution. Below steps had solved the issue and we were able to install VC++ without getting any error.

1. Download and install subinacl from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en

2. Download reset.cmd and put it in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder.

4. Enter into CMD prompt.

5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.

cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd

It seems these step will clean the registry for any permission related issues and therefore it is making this installation issues successful. Anyway I am not sure about it. If you know more details, you can share it thro' comments.

PayPal is facing issues in doing transaction from/to India

PayPal which is a widely used payment processing system stops personal payments to and from India.

TechCruch says It is reversing personal transactions; transactions involving businesses are still allowed..

PayPal is sending below email while doing payment reversal

Your payment of has been sent back to the sender of the payment.

We reversed this payment because we have stopped allowing personal payments to be sent to or from India.

If this was a payment for a purchase of goods or services, and not a personal payment, then you may contact the buyer and have him or her resend the payment as follows: (a) click the Send Money tab, (b) select "Goods," and (c) provide a shipping address.

If this payment was a personal payment such as a gift, then we have requested that the sender find another payment method until we restore personal payments to and from India.

We are trying to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and we're sorry for any inconvenience.

Thank you,
PayPal

But going thro' lot of discussions about this issue I understand that this issue occurs not only for personal payments but other payments (goods, service) are also facing some issues.

In these discussion, people are raising below questions.

1. Why Paypal is doing payment reversal without doing any prior information to the customers?

2. Why it targets only India?

3. Is it technical problem from PayPal side? Or something related to regulatory actions taken by RBI (Central Bank of India)?.

4. How long it will continue? Is it temporary issue or policy change?

5. Is it possible for Paypal to reverse the money already withdrawn to the Indian bank accounts?

6. For some people, Payment reversal causes negative balance in paypal account. Will it create any further issues?

It seems withdrawal from paypal to bank account in India is also getting affected. Even Bank withdrawal is also getting reversed.

The discussions about this issue shows that people got angry due to this irresponsible activities of the PayPal. But one thing is very clear from the discussion. There is no alternate payment processing system for PayPal. There may be some eCommerce systems. But they may be lagging either availability or safety, or they may be expensive. For example Google Checkout is not available in India.

So, let us hope for recovery of PayPal and continue using PayPal still Google Checkout takes the lead.

PayPal is the subsidiary of eBay which is a popular online auction and shopping website.

Do you want to say anything about this PayPal issue? Share it thro' comments.

And, if you know any further updates about this issue, you can mention here.

Some PayPal users are getting ready to find some alternates. Find below the message in one of the freelance website rentacoder

Attention Indian coders who were paid via PayPal this payment period:
PayPal is experiencing internal issues with payments to India. We sent all payments to them by Thursday February 4th (in the same manner we have done every month prior). Thursday 67 Indian PayPal users received an email from PayPal stating "We reversed this payment because we have stopped allowing personal payments to be sent to or from India. "...despite the fact that the payments were not sent in this manner. Unfortunately today PayPal reversed an additional 137 payments (this time supposedly because of the shipping address).

We are working with our PayPal rep and have escalated this issue to PayPal management, to determine if there is any way we can send these through PayPal. However, if we cannot, we may have to ask you to switch to another payment method. We will let you know more once we find out more.

Till now only official information from paypal is the below blog post.

Hi blog readers, it’s Anuj from the communications team here.

I’m writing to let you know that personal payments to and from India and transfers to local banks in India have been suspended while we work with our business partners and other stakeholders to address questions they have about the service.

During this time, customers can still make commercial payments to India but merchants cannot withdraw funds in Rupees to local Indian banks.

We’re trying to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and we’re really sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause our customers in India and around the world.

I’ll update the blog as soon as we have more information to share.

Anuj

Rentacoder is suggesting Payonner as an alternative. Find below this message from RentaCoder.

Update for Indian coders using PayPal: As you know, PayPal recently blocked payments to India, including the
ones we sent. Our PayPal rep found a workaround that allowed us to resend them on the the 5th, and unlike previous attempts, these payments have not yet been returned to us (and we believe it worked). However we have never received a coherent answer from PayPal as to why they blocked any of the payments to start with, so this workaround may or may not work next month. If you wish to avoid the uncertainty and switch to Payoneer, they are offering a special to Indian workers. If you tell them you are from Rent a Coder and signup before February 28th, they will waive the typical $9.95 activation fee and expedite shipping for free (which will give you the card in hand in 7-10 days of approval). Click here for questions or to signup.

Now, what is in your mind? Will you continue using Paypal or start using another system? You can answer is poll.
