SEO Vs. SEM

In my previous video, I explained about SEO.

These Days, Internet Marketing leads any other Marketing approaches. It becomes mandatory to do Internet marketing for selling any kind of products.

The "Internet Marketing" includes various ways of marketing the products. Find below some of them.

  • Email Marketing
  • Social Media promotion
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

In this post we will see about the SEM.

The Word “SEM” gives different meanings based on the context. Generally it represents all kind of activities (including SEO) for bringing traffic from Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

But when talking about SEM with SEO, the word SEM represents only the PPC (paid) advertisements while SEO represents getting natural or organic traffic from the Search Engines.

Search engine marketing, (SEM), is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.

SEM allows you to advertise on several keywords, delivers instant traffic and can be turn on, off, up or down at anytime. Also, it's easy to run tests on landing pages and new keywords. The downside is that you have to pay for clicks.
SEO is more constant and ongoing and you don't have to pay for every click. But you can only effectively target 3-5 keywords, it takes longer to see results and you can't test new landing pages easily.

You can refer the the below Screenshot of SERP (Search Engine Result Page) to start understanding SEO and SEM.

In 2008, North American advertisers spent US$13.5 billion on search engine marketing. The largest SEM vendors are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter. [Source- WikiPedia]

Note that even if the Google Adword allows you to show your site at top of SERP by paying money, it doesn't mean that you can get top position for any of your websites just by paying money. Because Google Adwords implement complex Quality Score concept which will set the price for the click based on relevancy and quality of your page. i-e If you have high quality site and you run your PPC campaign properly with appropriate keywords, you can bring your site at top by spending less amount of money. And, the spending for PPC to promote SEO friendly site will be less comparing to other sites for getting same number of clicks.

Both SEO and PPC are relevant technologies to get traffic to your site, and in general PPC is the fastest, but also the most expensive and has the disadvantage that when you stop paying the traffic stops too.
