Among the business leaders Obama was to meet were Google CEO Eric Schmidt; Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz; Cisco Systems CEO John Chambers; Twitter CEO Dick Costolo; and Apple's Steve Jobs.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said that Obama wants to keep exchanging ideas with the group "so we can work as partners to promote growth and create good jobs in the United States."
The gathering is part of the president's effort to get companies such as Google, Apple and Twitter behind his push to keep spending on high-tech initiatives. Obama is proposing to spend billions of dollars on high-speed Internet, education and other programs.

The group also discussed ways to encourage people to study science, technology, engineering and math and to pursue careers in those fields.
